At the base of the stairs was a solitary black pony, not a war horse of the Anointed, not a great eagle. Father Ulna set upon the pony as now several Sapphires had come to ride beside him each on their own steeds covered in silver armor.

“Captains,” he said, “You have given signal as decreed for Anointed to mount up as I gave word of this morning?”

“Yes, Father. Those of Ruby and Emerald have done so. Eight thousand await your command.”

He smiled looking to Habrin.

Habrin tried to hide the fact that he was shaking, covering his hands in his robe.

“Do not fear,” Father Ulna said.

“A weapon, Father?” Brul asked. “Or at least your staff?”

“My staff is where it should be, I need no weapon save the word of Vasruda.”

Habrin felt tears welling in his eyes.

“You can’t leave!” he said at last, falling towards the ground beneath Father Ulna. “We need you here!”

“My child,” he said. “You are my Sapphire Templar, I give you one charge: Assure the Light returns to the world, walk your path in honor. You are not lost but our flock has chosen to turn to return to Vasruhal, I shall not abandon them.”

“They left of their own free will, we must protect the city and the temple.”

He smiled, “And by their own free will, they turn to me and call out. They seek high ground in the flood, and as a good shepherd, I shall go to them no matter the storm. We must fight the flood and the wolves. But this place?” he said, motioning and looking around, “It is just stone and not one shall remain upon the other, but keep faith and that which this place stands for, will live forever.” He leaned down, kissing Habrin on his head.

“I go in peace and bring war to our enemies, for our people shall never be left alone.”

With that Father Ulna spurred his pony and began away from the temple, golden fire flowing from him as the hooves of the Sapphire Captains’ horses clacked behind him.

“I will see to defenses,” Brul said, “I must consult with those of the Sapphire and Anointed of the lower city.”

“The Anointed ride with Father Ulna,” Habrin said.

“Yes, but some remain behind for now. We will assure the city is protected as much as it can be until they return. You must do as Father Ulna said, though. Good luck, my friend.”

As Brul departed, Habrin looked to the temple. Then, up to the torch high above.

He said to Assure the light returns and I must do that. I go to where none save himself are to go. The fourth level. I must do as he has said.
